Read better, faster and smarter
As a self improvement goal for 2018, I decided to read about 50 books this year. Last year, I managed to read close to 10 books but most of it were related to my work or about iconic figures that I could draw inspirations from.
I started in January and so far I’ve read about 14 books i.e, 4 books on average each month. I’m not a voracious reader, well not just yet but I carry a book with me wherever I go and try to read as much as I can sometimes reading two books at a time( either a combination of an audiobook and physical book or day time read during my commute and a bedtime read that’s not too heavy). I use all possible sources available such as summary of books on GetAbstract, e-books on Kindle, audiobooks on Audible or good old physical books. Typically, I choose to read non-fictional literature, biographies of successful people or self-development books that will help me in my career and personal life.
So, how do you remember the key contents and get the most out of your reading when you consume so many books ? Well..
- Read like your life depends on it— Read atleast 30mins everyday
- Content — Think about what you want to learn from the book.
- Don’t skim read — Pick 2 or 3 important chapters/topics from the book that resonates with you and pay close attention to the details .
- Take notes— Write down important points on your smartphone as you read and refer back to them when you have some downtime e.g, when you are waiting for the train, standing in line for coffee or doing your business. The more you re-read the better it sticks in your mind.
- Practice— Apply the principles or strategies mindfully in real life. Whether you are dealing with ineffective communication at work or trying to resolve conflicts with your partner. Practice what you’ve learnt and you’d be amazed how these simple learning tricks can change your life.
Remember to enjoy the process of reading, learning and growing!
